How I Hang My Quilts: A Simple Step-By-Step Guide

Updated: Mar 22

Hanging quilts is a wonderful way to display your hard work, and I love using leather straps for a unique, rustic touch. Here’s how I do it:

Materials You'll Need:

• Leather straps. You can find many color options on Amazon or Micheals

• A wooden dowel (1.5-inch diameter, length depending on the size of your quilt—staining optional). I get my dowels from Home Depot or Lowe's

• Leather hole punch

• 2 nails

Step 1: Cut the Leather

Start by cutting a strip of leather that’s about 1.5 inches wide and 11 inches long. The rich texture and warmth of the leather add a beautiful rustic element to any quilt!

Step 2: Prepare the Leather

Fold the leather at the 4.5-inch mark, then fold the remaining 1.5 inches over one more time. This creates a clean, sturdy loop to hang your quilt from.

Step 3: Punch Holes

Using a leather hole punch, create holes through all three layers of leather where the strap will attach to the wall. First, mark the center of the strip at 0.75 inches. Then, punch holes at 1.5 inches, 10.5 inches, and 0.75 inches. This ensures the leather can hold your quilt securely.

Step 4: Measure and Add Length

Measure the width of your quilt and add at least 4 inches to that measurement to know the right length for your wooden dowel. This extra length allows for flexibility when hanging your quilt and ensures it hangs nicely.

Step 5: Hang the Leather Loops

Thread the nails through the holes in the leather straps, then install nails into the wall where you want to hang the quilt. This will secure the leather loops to the wall.

Step 6: Add the Quilt

Slide your quilt sleeve onto a sturdy wooden dowel, then hang the dowel through the leather loops, and voilà! Your quilt is now beautifully displayed. If you prefer, you can opt for fabric loops instead of a sleeve for a different look.

By following these steps, you’ll create a minimalist and beautiful way to display your quilts while adding a rustic flair to your home.
