Magic Rows Quilt Assembly Method 🪄

Updated: Sep 23

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through my favorite method for assembling quilt tops with speed and precision—the Magic Rows method! I learned this amazing method from a dear friend and it became one of my favorite methods for putting quilts together! If you've ever laid out your blocks perfectly on your design wall only to sew them together out of order (been there!), this technique is going to be a game changer. We’ll start by organizing your blocks, stacking them in a way that preserves your layout, and then chain piecing them together without mixing anything up. This method works beautifully whether you're working on a small baby quilt or a large bed-sized one, and it’s perfect for keeping rows and columns exactly where they belong from start to finish. Let’s dive in!

You’ll need:

•  Painter’s tape + Sharpie for labeling

•  Your arranged quilt blocks on a design wall

Step 1: Layout

Arrange your quilt blocks on your design wall in your desired layout.

Step 1: Layout

Step 2: Label

•  Number columns (1, 2, 3,...)

•  Letter rows (A, B, C,...)

Use painter’s tape + Sharpie for easy removal later.

Step 2: Label
Step 2: Label

Step 3: Stack Columns

•  Start with Column 1 (Master Stack): stack blocks top to bottom

•  Repeat for all columns

•  Place each column stack next to the other in order (for bigger blocks/squares I lay them next to each other on the floor)

Step 4: Combine Stacks

•  Leave Column 1 stack as-is

•  Stack Column 2 on top of 3, then stack that on top of 4, and so on

•  You’ll end up with two stacks: Column 1 (left), the rest (right)

Step 5: Chain Piece Rows

•  Take top block from Column 1 + top block from Column 2

•  Place right sides together, sew

•  Continue: one block from each stack at a time

•  Do not cut the thread between blocks

Step 5: Chain Piece Rows
Step 5: Chain Piece Rows

Step 6: Continue with Next Columns

•  When you run out of blocks from Column 1, continue sewing next columns onto the row chain

•  Maintain order

Step 7: Separate & Press Rows

•  Snip between rows

•  Lay out in order

•  Press seams, alternating directions (for nesting)

Step 8: Assemble Quilt Top

•  Sew rows together in alphabetical order

•  Match seams carefully

•  Final press and admire!

This technique works for any layout and is great for keeping everything perfectly aligned during piecing.
